SMS Takes a Deep Dive Into Ocean Exploration

This past Wednesday, September 21, students of SMS had the opportunity to chat with fellow crew members aboard the E/V Nautilus, an exploration vessel that travels al around the world, owned by Ocean Exploration Trust (OET). OET is an organization created by Dr. Robert Ballard, who played a crucial role in finding the wreckage of the RMS Titanic. OET’s mission is to “explore the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, and chemistry while pushing the boundaries of education, outreach, and technological innovation” (Nautilslive.org).

Over the course of 30 mins, our students got up and personal with the personnel onboard the Nautilus as the crew showed graphics and videos of their many missions across the world. Never before seen footage was shown during this interaction of deep water shark, squid, and other fascinating creatures.

Students of Mr. Byas’s Robotics class became experts in mapping the ocean floor by participating in seafloor mapping exercises that detail how sonar technology is used to map the seafloor!
